Kitsumkalum Education Services

The Kitsumkalum Band members residing at the Kitsumkalum Reserve attend school in the Coast Mountain School District #82 (CMSD).
While living on reserve our students have the choice of going to school in a private or public school.

The Band also operates a Band Operated school - ´Na Aksa Gila Kyew Learning Centre, using the Distant Education curriculum and the achievement is for dogwood certificate or an adult dogwood certificate. Students may also work on upgrades to attent college or university.

The Education Coordinator, Charlotte Guno, is presently involved with the following organizations with meetings held monthly or three times a school year.

  5. Northwest Community College First Nations Council
  6. University of Northern British Columbia

  9. Gila Kyew Parent Club

What does the Education Coordinator do?
The Education Coordinator meets with the principal/teachers of the schools in CMSD#82 as required or when a student needs someone to advocate for them.

She has developed a good working relationship with the Ministry of Education - Aboriginal Branch.
The Education Coordinator ensures that the needs of the students are met according to the Local Education Agreement signed with the School District.
She ensures good communication between the First Nations Education Center, all schools and CMSD#82. Work in progress - Enhancement Agreement.

September 30, of each school year a nominal roll is completed. The nominal roll provides Indian & Northern Affairs with the information needed to fund our programs.

Upon completing grade 12, any band member can access the Post Secondary Assistance program. The deadline for funding is May 30 for students wanting to start classes in September.

Programs provided for students are the following:

  • Monthly incentive allowance
  • Homework Club
  • Workshops
  • Summer Employment Program
