Since 2005, when KVL first started up, Cypress Forest Consultants have provided their engineering expertise. They helped KVL in the search for viable timber within the Kitsumkalum traditional territory. This search is ongoing. In February of 2006 Cypress engineered approximately 1/3 of the 400,000m3 of KVL’s total allowable cut. Today they have engineered 2/3 of the allowable cut.

In the first year KVL developed 9 blocks for six different cutting permits. Two band members, George Cooley and Troy Sam, assisted with the first years work. In the second year KVL developed 8 blocks for 6 cutting permits. Three band members assisted in the second year's development: Troy Sam, Fred Wesley, and John Christiansen.

Layout season usually starts in May and ends in September after the next year's wood is laid out.

Cypress Forest Consultants is a team of professional foresters in a mid-sized consulting firm in operation since 1994.  Their areas of operation are Terrace, Prince Rupert, Kitimat, Stewart/Meziadin, Nass Valley, and Hazelton.
